Bears x NABJ
NABJ’s Chicago Chapter hosted a first of its kind virtual roundtable between The Chicago Bears, Black reporters and media outlets to discuss access and resources. Writers, podcasters, and leadership of smaller organizations got rare face time with Halas Hall leadership and got their questions answered about leveling the playing field.
“This is something we would like to see across the league for the other 31 teams as sort of a best practices,” said Kenlyn Tyree, an NFL communications official on the call.
The over 90 minute dialogue contained candid discussion about the challenges Black press face when covering major sports teams. The Chicago Bears made a commitment with NABJ to work in partnership on local press access going forward, making sure Black reporters have equal opportunity to cover the historic franchise.
“It’s an honor to work with the Bears on this effort,” said NABJCC President Brandon Pope. “They come to the table with passion and heart. Their PR team is setting a great example for pro sports teams not just in Chicago, but around the country. We look forward to seeing how this partnership blooms.”
In the coming days, NABJCC leadership will engage with The Chicago Bears on press access and future events. Stay tuned for updates.
