The ABA Journal is seeking an experienced journalist for the position of assistant managing editor based in Chicago. The assistant managing editor will supervise coverage of national legal news both online and in the print edition of our award-winning magazine, and will have experience in digital story telling. We are looking for a sharp editor who can develop and edit in-depth stories and profiles that reflect first-rate reporting and writing. The assistant managing editor works with staff writers and freelancers and edits columns by nationally recognized lawyers.
In collaboration with the Editor and Publisher and the Managing Editor, establishes the editorial direction for assigned interest portfolios of the ABA Journal.Coordinates meaningful articles/stories for an assigned portfolio that will run in both the magazine and electronic versions of the ABA Journal.
Develops and plans articles/stories for an assigned portfolio and assigns them to appropriate staff writers, freelancers, and/or legal experts.
Directs, assigned story authors, edits copy produced by the authors, and coordinate final production with copy editors and page designers.
Conducts or assigns story research and development through contacts, educational sessions, awareness of new/pending legislation, and general interest matters related to their assigned portfolio. Liaises with ABA leaders and entities to maintain awareness of and reporting on major initiatives or matters of interest, mid-year and annual meeting activities, and other key ABA events.
Provides leadership, coaching, counseling, performance feedback, and, when appropriate applies discipline to an assigned team.
Performs other related duties as required.
