NABJCC Hosts Illinois Attorney General Candidates
By: Will Jones, ABC 7 Chicago / NABJCC Board Member
(Chicago, IL) – There were some heated exchanges between candidates hoping to be the next Illinois Attorney General at a Feb. 26 Candidates Forum hosted by NABJ-Chicago. Held at CBS 2, the forum, moderated by Derrick Blakley, CBS 2’s political reporter, drew both heavy attendance and viewership on streaming platforms.
NABJ-Chicago had invited all eight Democratic candidates — including Scott Drury, Sharon Fairley, Aaron Goldstein, Renato Mariotti, Pat Quinn, Kwame Raoul, Nancy Rotering and Jesse Ruiz — to participate, as well as the two Republican candidates — Gary Grasso and Erika Harold.
All but Rotering, Grasso and Harold were in attendance.
Candidates presented their platforms and answered questions from the community and seasoned journalists. Live streaming of this critical NABJCC monthly programming was one of our most watched, garnering over 6,000 views on CBS2’s page and nearly 500 on NABJCC’S.
Three weeks later, Illinois State Sen. Kwame Raoul later captured the Democratic nomination in the March 20 primary, while Harold, a Harvard-educated attorney and former Miss America, emerged the Republican nominee — setting up a rare match-up between African-American candidates on both sides of the aisle!
