National Geographic Documentary Films presents the critically acclaimed five-part documentary series from Participant and Kartemquin Films, CITY SO REAL, the fascinating and complex portrait of contemporary Chicago from twice Academy Award®-nominated filmmaker Steve James (“America to Me,” “Hoop Dreams”) and longtime producing partner Zak Piper (“Life Itself,” “The Interrupters”).

CITY SO REAL delivers a deep, multifaceted look into the soul of a quintessentially American city, set against the backdrop of its history-making 2019 mayoral election. NatGeo is set to air CITY SO REAL in an unprecedented one-night, five-hour, commercial-free event on Thursday, October 29 beginning at 7 PM ET/PT, with all five episodes then to be available on Hulu the following day — Friday, October 30.

NABJ-Chicago is among a select group of four CHICAGO organizations invited to a VIRTUAL OCTOBER 25 PREMIERE — an event featuring celebrity artists and TV personalities, musical performances, and a panel discussion with Chicagoans portrayed in the film. CITY SO REAL includes footage of NABJ-CHICAGO’s exclusive Jan. 17, 2019 mayoral forum held at the Chicago Sun-Times. One of the only forums featuring nearly all of the 14 candidates who ran in the historic election, James was granted access by NABJ-CHICAGO for his documentary.
