President’s Message

Serving as president of the NABJ Chicago Chapter is the greatest honor of my life—and a responsibility I do not take lightly. Every day, I wake up committed to the impact-driven work that matters most to you. Alongside our executive board, I am proud to stand on the shoulders of the Black journalism trailblazers who came before us—those who paved the way, set the vision, and passed us the baton. It is now on all of us to carry that legacy forward.

We are doing exactly that by expanding our efforts to empower the next generation of journalists—leveraging partnerships across corporate, foundation, and athletics sectors; providing hands-on journalism training for students; and awarding historic levels of scholarship support.

At the same time, we remain deeply committed to supporting early-career, mid-level, and veteran journalists through informative programming, meaningful networking opportunities, career and coverage access, mental health resources, and hardship support.

At a moment when Black journalists and Black media institutions are under attack and losing critical support, NABJ-Chicago is here to uplift you and fight for you. The work you produce has never been more essential to our city, our country, and our democracy. My team and I are here to support you in every way we can.

Whether you’re a freelancer, writer, content creator, or simply media-curious, NABJ-Chicago is a home for you. If you’re new to the city, let’s grab coffee—or schedule a Zoom or FaceTime. If you need support, my line is always open. And if you’re looking to get involved, we can always use your help. Join a committee and be part of our mission to power the next generation of journalists.

Yours in service,
Brandon Pope

Our History & Mission

The National Association of Black Journalists-Chicago Chapter (NABJCC), founded in the early 1970s, was created to strengthen journalism by increasing Black representation, leadership, and equity within the media industry.

Originally known as the Chicago Association of Black Journalists, the chapter played a key role in founding the National Association of Black Journalists in 1975. Today, NABJ Chicago unites Black journalists committed to excellence, truth in reporting, professional development, student mentorship, and scholarship support.

We empower Black journalists through community and advocacy. By fostering connections, providing educational opportunities, and celebrating journalistic excellence, we ensure Black voices are heard, valued, and represented in media.
