In These Times a national, independent, nonprofit, monthly magazine and website based in Chicago, is hiring an assistant editor. Since 1976, we have covered movements for social, racial, economic and environmental justice, and sought to expand the boundaries of the politically possible. Every month, In These Times reaches 40,000 subscribers and 500,000 web readers.
Author and historian James Weinstein founded In These Times in 1976 with the mission “to identify and clarify the struggles against corporate power now multiplying in American society.” Through nine presidential administrations, In These Times has adhered to the historical understanding that to succeed political movements need their own media to inform, educate, orient and inspire their members.The assistant editor will run In These Times’ internship program and help mentor the next generation of progressive journalists.
The assistant editor will also head fact-checking for In These Times; every story published in the magazine and online is fact-checked according to the highest standards. The assistant editor will help the print magazine go to press each month, which includes attending regular meetings, providing editorial feedback to pieces, and overseeing the timeline of some pieces from through completion. Other duties include participating in weekly assignment meetings and collaborating with colleagues via Slack.
- Undergraduate degree in Journalism, English, History or the Social Sciences
- Interest in a career in publishing or journalism
- Passion for progressive politics, both movement and electoral
- Savvy at translating their enthusiasm into compelling storytelling that drives social change
- Advanced Microsoft Word and Google Suite experience
- Strong organizational skills and close attention to detail
- Ability to independently manage projects
- Creative problem solving
