Statement on Minnesota Journalist Arrests and Attacks on Press Freedom

The National Association of Black Journalists Chicago Chapter mourns the passing of Rev. Jesse L. Jackson Sr., a towering civil rights leader, global humanitarian, and unwavering advocate for justice whose voice helped shape the moral conscience of our nation. Rev. Jackson dedicated his life to advancing equity, economic opportunity, and political empowerment for Black Americans and marginalized communities around the world. From his work alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to founding Operation PUSH and later theRainbow PUSH Coalition, he challenged systems of injustice while inspiring generations to believe that progress was not only possible, but necessary.

Rev. Jackson understood the power of the press and the responsibility of journalists to tell the full truth of our communities. He called for fairness in media representation and demanded accountability in coverage that affected Black communities. His advocacy helped open doors and expand opportunities for journalists of color across Chicago and the nation.

As NABJ Chicago, we recognize the profound impact Rev. Jackson had on the civic, political, and social fabric of this city. His leadership leaves an enduring imprint on Chicago and on the generations who continue the work of justice and equality.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to the Jackson family, the Rainbow PUSH Coalition, and all who were touched by his life and legacy. We honor him by recommitting ourselves to truth, fairness, and courageous journalism in service of our communities.
