SUMMARY:Rise Again: Tulsa and The Red Summer
DESCRIPTION:National Geographic has set a June 18 date for the premiere of its documentary film Rise Again: Tulsa and the Red Summer\, the network said Monday. The documentary focuses on the two-day Tulsa Massacre in 1921 that led to the murder of hundreds of Black people and left thousands homeless and displaced\, said network executives. \nThe film\, produced by Dawn Porter (Good Trouble: John Lewis)\, reveals insights into racial conflict incidents that erupted in the early 20th century. It also follows the decades-long effort by descendants and community members to find victims’ bodies and unearth truths that have been suppressed for nearly a century. \nWatch the trailer here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rFR0wUtcrZU . \nGuests can RSVP  by clicking on here: https://rsvp.nationalgeographicevents.com/_dmm00.

SUMMARY:Investing Where We Live: The Bold Collaboration to Rebuild BIPOC Communities
DESCRIPTION:NABJ-CHICAGO PRESENTS\nInvesting Where We Live: “The Bold Collaboration to Rebuild BIPOC Communities” \nTHURSDAY\, APRIL 22\, 2021 \n6:00 PM – 7:30 PM CST VIA ZOOM \nOpen to All Members!\nZoom link will be sent to registrants \n*1ST 50 MEMBERS WHO RSVP AND ATTEND WILL RECEIVE FREE $20 DOORDASH GIFT CARD ON NIGHT OF THE EVENT! \nTo RSVP email rsvp@nabjchicago.org. \n  \n\nAbout “Investing Where We Live”\n  \nNABJ-CHICAGO is privileged to be selected to frame this citywide discussion on how the devastating impact of COVID-19 in Black and Latinx communities has highlighted inequitable policies and historic divestment on Chicago’s South and West sides. While the vaccine will help contain the virus\, collective and rapid action will be required to rectify history rather than repeat it. That’s where the “Mapping COVID-19 Recovery” project\, a series of maps illustrating where public\, private and philanthropic sector investments are going in BIPOC communities\, comes in. \nAmong early findings: The year before the pandemic\, foundations funded more Downtown Chicago organizations than communities predominantly Black\, Indigenous and People of Color. More dollars have flowed to those communities and to BIPOC-led organizations since the pandemic. In this groundbreaking collaborative\, philanthropic stakeholders and researchers from 25 Chicago civic organizations have come together to share data about shifting their investments in response to the pandemic and examining what more can be done. \n

SUMMARY:Broadcast vs. Print Writing: Making It Sing\, Succinctly
DESCRIPTION:About Broadcast vs. Print Writing\n  \nThis workshop will hone understanding of the difference between writing for print and writing for broadcast. Broadcast news is written for the ear. Print news is written for the eyes. Broadcast news is about presentation — sharp\, clear\, concise language to capture attention quickly and not lose an audience. Print news is about writing style — capturing attention quickly\, yes\, but then story building\, through grammar\, word choice and structured distribution of information. \nAbout Our Trainers\nMaudlyne Ihejirika\, is an urban affairs reporter at the Chicago Sun-Times\, who pens its “Chicago Chronicles” column on issues impacting Black and Brown communities. President of NABJ-Chicago and the Chicago Journalists Association\, she was inducted into the Hall of Fame at Northwestern University Medill School of Journalism in 2020\, and the Hall of Fame at University of Iowa School of Journalism & Mass Communication in 2018. She is author of “Escape From Nigeria: A Memoir of Faith\, Love and War” (2016\, Africa World Press)\, and holds an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from Saint Xavier University. Her numerous awards include the Studs Terkel Award and several Peter Lisagor and NABJ Salute to Excellence Awards. \nSuzanne Le Mignot\, is a weekend news morning anchor and weekday reporter at CBS 2 Chicago\, joining the station full-time in 1999\, after working as a freelancer there since 1995. She previously spent five years as a anchor/reporter at radio stations including WBBM-AM Newsradio 790\, WGN-AM and WTMJ-AM in Milwaukee\, and worked as a TV news anchor/reporter in Belgrade\, Yugoslavia. She began her career at WUSF-TV in Tampa\, Fl. She is recipient of numerous awards\, including several local and national Emmys and Peter Lisagor Awards\, A Sarah Brown Boyden Award\, and other prestigious honors from groups including Associated Press\, Chicago Bar Association and the National Civil Rights Library. \n  \nTo RSVP email rsvp@nabjchicago.org.
