About “Investing Where We Live”

NABJ-CHICAGO is privileged to be selected to frame this citywide discussion on how the devastating impact of COVID-19 in Black and Latinx communities has highlighted inequitable policies and historic divestment on Chicago’s South and West sides. While the vaccine will help contain the virus, collective and rapid action will be required to rectify history rather than repeat it. That’s where the “Mapping COVID-19 Recovery” project, a series of maps illustrating where public, private and philanthropic sector investments are going in BIPOC communities, comes in.

Among early findings: The year before the pandemic, foundations funded more Downtown Chicago organizations than communities predominantly Black, Indigenous and People of Color. More dollars have flowed to those communities and to BIPOC-led organizations since the pandemic. In this groundbreaking collaborative, philanthropic stakeholders and researchers from 25 Chicago civic organizations have come together to share data about shifting their investments in response to the pandemic and examining what more can be done.
