NABJ-Chicago would like to express great sadness at the loss of journalism pioneer, Lacy J. Banks, at the age of 68.

The Sun-Times sports veteran and a founding member of this chapter opened countless doors for many of us in this industry. News of his passing is attracting national tributes from colleagues, and even Mayor Rahm Emanuel, who remembers him as a “trailblazer” in his field who built bridges between diverse communities.

His longtime employer, the Sun-Times, details the important legacy of one of our most beloved storytellers: Here

You’ve seen the statistics: There are currently 123,000 Chicago Public Schools students who attend what have been characterized as underperforming schools-schools that are not preparing them for the world of work or college. Most of these schools are on our city’s South and West Sides.

Many schools may soon be closed, which has angered neighborhood residents. But if changes are not made, how can we expect better results? How is CPS dealing with the educational inequities impacting black children in our city? What happens next?

Join NABJ-Chicago and the Columbia College Radio Department on Tuesday, February 28, 2012 for a frank discussion with Chicago Public Schools CEO Jean-Claude Brizard about his vision for delivering opportunities for quality education to every neighborhood in the city. Also hear from school reform advocates who are playing a major role in that transformation. See you there!

Front-page shenanigans of high profilers like Charlie Sheen, Tiger Woods and Chris Brown give some the perception that white stars receive more positive coverage than black celebs in similar scenarios. NABJ-Chicago is hosting a discussion that will shed light on how celebrity scandals are covered–from Tiger Woods to Charlie Sheen, from Michael Vick and Kanye West to Barry Bonds and Bret Favre and Eminem. Did Tiger Woods get a fair shake? Did Brett Favre and others get a pass?

The National Association of Black Journalists-Chicago Chapter and the Columbia College Radio Department invite you to join us for an enlightening forum on celebrity media coverage. Mix and mingle with media movers-and-shakers on our panel and in the audience.

On behalf of NABJ-Chicago’s executive board, I would like to express my disappointment at learning of Chicago-based WBBM-TV’s decision to air a quote from a four-year-old boy about gun violence in the Park Manor community, apparently without providing proper context. As this story about the incident on the Maynard Institute’s site on July 21 points out, the child’s interview aired making it appear that his solution to gun violence in his neighborhood was to get a gun. A WBBM-TV anchor subsequently remarked on air about this seemingly “scary” soundbite. In actuality, as unedited video footage revealed in a July 28 follow-up, the boy said he wanted to get a gun and work as a police officer to prevent further violence. NABJ-Chicago pays particular attention to the coverage of diverse sources in all facets of the media, and while we understand deadline pressures, we encourage all news entities to be cautious in covering vulnerable communities and their members. We hold ourselves to the same standard, having held a forum on responsibly covering violence in Chicago last year. Though we appreciate that WBBM-TV realized its error and did not re-air the video beyond two early-morning segments, we do wish the station had taken the additional step to make its mistake clear on air. We hope this unfortunate incident will help awaken media outlets in Chicago and the nation about the importance of context.
